Choosing Gratitude in Every Season (Maci Stowe)

Gratitude is easy when life is going the way we hoped. It's easy to thank God for answered prayers, happy moments, and seasons when everything seems to fall into place. But what happens when life looks different than we imagined? What about the seasons filled with uncertainty, exhaustion, disappointment, or heartache?
I've been learning that gratitude isn't dependent on our circumstances. It's a choice we make, even when life feels hard.
As a mother, I find myself reminded of this often. Motherhood is full of beautiful blessings, but it also comes with challenges that can leave us feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, and sometimes wondering if we're doing enough. There are days filled with sweet hugs and laughter, and there are days when simply making it to bedtime feels like a huge accomplishment.
But even in those ordinary, exhausting moments, there is something to be thankful for.
I've also learned that gratitude can exist alongside grief. There have been seasons in my own life when gratitude was not about celebrating what was happening, but about recognizing who was walking through it with me. During loss, I experienced God's closeness in a way that is difficult to put into words. In the middle of heartbreak, He reminded me that He is a good, good Father. He doesn't just meet us on the mountaintops; He gets down in the trenches with us. He sits with us in our sorrow, holds us when we don't have the strength to stand, and reminds us that we are never alone.
I am incredibly grateful for His nearness and strength during that season. My circumstances weren't what I prayed for, but His presence was still a gift.
First Thessalonians 5:18 tells us, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
Notice that Scripture doesn't say to give thanks only when circumstances are good. It calls us to give thanks in all circumstances. That doesn't mean we have to be thankful for every hardship or pretend painful seasons don't hurt. It means we can remain thankful because God is still good, even when life is not.
Sometimes gratitude looks like answered prayers. Other times, it looks like trusting God when the answers haven't come. Sometimes it's found in the laughter of our children, and other times it's found in the strength God gives us to get through another difficult day.
Motherhood has taught me that some of the greatest blessings are found in the smallest moments. A little hand reaching for mine, bedtime prayers, messy homes, and the everyday moments we often overlook. But it has also reminded me that my joy cannot depend on everything going perfectly.
Our circumstances will change. Seasons will come and go. Some days will be full of joy, while others will require us to lean a little harder on Jesus.
Through it all, God remains faithful.
My encouragement is this: Don't wait until life is perfect to practice gratitude. Don't wait until the hard season passes or every prayer is answered. Look for God's goodness right where you are. I promise you will find it.
Whether you're navigating motherhood, waiting on a promise, walking through loss, or simply trying to find your footing in a new season, there is always room to cultivate a grateful heart.
May we learn to thank God not just for what He does, but for who He is. And may we never allow the circumstances around us to overshadow the faithfulness of the God who walks beside us through them.
Gratitude isn't about having a perfect life. It's about recognizing a faithful God in every season.
