Cultivating Gratitude through Scripture (Aviela Groder)

Gratitude is easy when life is going well!! It’s easy to see God’s goodness when prayers are answered, blessings are abundant, and things are falling into place. But what about the ordinary days? The waiting seasons? The moments when life doesn’t look quite how we imagined?
We can find the truth in scripture. The Bible reminds us that gratitude is not meant to be dependent on our circumstances. It is something we are called to cultivate daily, regardless of what life brings.
In this life, we will experience disappointment, hardship, or uncertainty. But choosing to have a grateful heart allows for us to recognize God’s goodness in the middle of it all.
So, what does it look like to live a life rooted in gratitude? Let’s look at four scriptures that can help us put thankfulness into practice every single day.
1. Give Thanks in Every Season
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
One of the most important things this scripture teaches us is that gratitude is a choice we can make in every season of life.
Notice that it says to give thanks in everything, not necessarily for everything. There is a difference. We don’t have to be thankful for every difficult circumstance, but we can remain thankful for God’s presence, faithfulness, and love.
How we can apply this daily:
Start your morning by thanking God before reaching for your phone.
When something doesn’t go as planned, pause and look for something you can still be thankful for.
Make prayer a regular part of your day, not just something you turn to when you need something.
Practice finding joy in the little things instead of waiting for big moments to feel blessed.
Gratitude grows when we intentionally make room for it in our everyday lives.
2. Don’t Forget His Goodness
Psalm 103:2
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
How quickly we can become consumed by what we don’t have, what we wish were different, or what we’re still waiting for. Sometimes, in looking ahead to the next blessing, we forget to appreciate the ones already in front of us.
David reminds his own soul not to forget God’s goodness.
This is such an important reminder because gratitude requires intentional remembrance. We have to take time to reflect on how far God has brought us, the prayers He has answered, the protection we may not have even recognized, and the countless ways He has provided.
How we can apply this daily:
Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you’re thankful for each day.
Reflect on answered prayers and moments when God showed up in your life.
When you feel discouraged, remind yourself of God’s faithfulness in previous seasons.
Take time to appreciate the blessings that have become part of your everyday routine.
Sometimes the very things we prayed for in the past are the things we overlook today. Don’t let familiarity make you forget how blessed you are.
3. Let Gratitude Shape Your Perspective
Colossians 3:15
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts… and be thankful.”
This scripture connects two beautiful things: peace and gratitude.
It’s easy to allow our minds to become consumed by stress, comparison, expectations, and everything we feel we need to accomplish. But when we intentionally shift our focus toward God, we create space for His peace to guide our hearts.
Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring the things that need attention in our lives. It means choosing not to let those things become the only things we see.
A grateful heart learns to recognize that even when life isn’t perfect, there is still goodness to be found.
How we can apply this daily:
Be mindful of comparison, especially when scrolling through social media.
Celebrate other people’s blessings without questioning your own season.
Slow down enough to appreciate the present instead of constantly chasing what’s next.
When your thoughts become overwhelmed, pause and intentionally name the things God has blessed you with.
The more we practice gratitude, the more we begin to see our lives through a different lens.
4. Recognize That Every Good Gift Comes From God
James 1:17
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…”
Every good thing in our lives is an opportunity to recognize God’s goodness.
Sometimes we associate blessings with the big things: answered prayers, major accomplishments, new opportunities, or life-changing moments. But God’s goodness can also be found in the everyday things we often take for granted.
A peaceful morning. A beautiful sunset. Time with our family & friends. The opportunity to begin again.
When we recognize that every good gift comes from above, even ordinary moments can become opportunities for worship and thanksgiving.
How we can apply this daily:
Thank God for the little things, not just the big milestones.
Recognize His provision in both expected and unexpected ways.
Practice being present rather than rushing through the moments you’re given.
Give God the glory for the blessings and opportunities in your life.
The more we recognize the source of our blessings, the more our gratitude naturally turns into worship. And that is the life that is pleasing to the Lord.
The truth is, there will always be something we’re waiting for, working toward, or that we wish we could change. But we don’t want to become so focused on what’s missing, that we miss the beauty of what God has already placed in our lives.
A grateful heart can be content even when our circumstances aren’t perfect. We don’t need all the answers to recognize that our God is still good.
