The Promise That He Will

Don’t you love it when the Lord brings something new to your walk with Him even though you are reading a passage of His Word that you have read so many times before? I was reading Genesis 12:1-3 once again as I worked through my daily study. I am currently doing a four-volume study by The Daily Grace Co. called: Christ in all of Scripture. As I worked through day one of week five and it had me annotate the passage as it always does in this study. I am truly loving the ability to annotate because I can see the scripture spaced out on paper and work through each line with instructions on what to look for. As I was doing this, I felt so much revealed to me within the lines of these three verses that I have often overlooked and missed.

Genesis 12:1-3

1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”

There are truly so many things that we can unpack within these scriptures. We can also talk about how God spoke this to Abram and the significance of it. This is almost the foundation of the story that unfolds within God’s people. Maybe one day I will write a blog with more information on all of that but today, I really just want to look at the three verses to see the character of God.

As I read through the verses, I see six attributes so well. I see that God is loving, just, sovereign, faithful, gracious and good. He loves Abram so deeply that He says no matter who messes with Abram- good or bad- will have to answer to Him which also shows how He is just. God has Abram’s back. He is gracious in showing him where to go. He is gracious in offering all of these protections even when Abram is just another normal man. He is sovereign in how He can bring all of these promises to complete fruition. He is faithful in completing these promises. He is good as He provides a land, blessing and powerful future for Abram.

As I read through this, I started to think of how so many of us need to read this with our name in the place of Abram. God does call us and sometimes that calling can be really scary. That calling can be hard and daunting. But we have to remember that if He calls us to it, He will show us the path. He will show us what is in store. God won’t call us into ministry just to leave us alone to figure it out. He goes before us and behind us. He is with us every step of the way. So often we feel like we have to figure it all out on our own or we have to be fully equipped. That has never been the case when it came to God.

When God called Noah, he didn’t already have the boat. God had to walk with him and instruct him in how to build the boat for years and then how to know when life would be able to happen again.

When Jesus walked with the disciples, none of them were at the full level of being equipped. We know this with certainty because of all the times the scriptures say that the disciples didn’t understand or still asked questions. It took them walking with Jesus- side by side- then losing Him, being with Him after resurrection, seeing Him in the ascension then living for Him in the rest of their life.

It’s the same with you. He is with you in every moment of life but especially within your calling. God will give you more than you can handle but only so you will have no choice but to depend on Him to help you get through it. He will provide a way. He always does but we have to remember that when He calls us, it could be scary but He will fight for us.
